Abba

God has many different names throughout the bible, but one of my favorites is Abba. This is one of the most intimate names by which God reveals Himself and translates as “daddy”. God is my Father; strong, authoritative, and in control. But He is also my daddy; protector, provider, and constant. He is my safe place. One of my favorite songs right now is by Lauren Daigle and is called Rescue. Some of the lyrics go like this…

“There is no distance, that cannot be covered over and over. You’re not defenseless. I’ll be your shelter; I’ll be your armor. I hear you whisper underneath your breath. I hear your SOS, your SOS.”

God…Abba…daddy. No matter which of His names we use, He hears us. When the monsters under the bed just won’t go away, He hears us. When the boogie man continues to hide in the closet, He hears us. When it’s the middle of the night and dark and we can’t see, He is our nightlight. Colossians 1:13 says, “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”. This same son during His last days on earth cried out “Abba, Father…” {Mark 14:36}. Jesus wanted His father to rescue Him. He knew the horrors He was facing and in that human moment, He needed His daddy.

Jesus himself; whom God sacrificed on our behalf, knew what He needed. He knew where He would find the strength needed to do God’s will. And it’s because of that sacrifice that we can go to our Abba in search of shelter. Through Jesus {John 14:6} we are no longer spiritual orphans. We’ve been adopted {Romans 8:15} into God’s family. And like every good daddy, He fights for his children. He fights with an army so strong that even our worst enemy on his best day will never defeat Him.

“I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4

So, what does this kind of surrender look like? It looks like a conversation between a father and his child. Talk to Him. Talk about the big stuff and the little stuff and all the “stuff” in between. Tell God about the bully {Satan} who just won’t leave you alone. Tell Him about how you messed up. You didn’t mean to; it just happened. Or maybe you meant to at the time and now you regret it. Tell Him about that too. The important thing is that we reach out to Him; stay in contact with Him.

Philippians 4:6 says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.” God is our safe place. We can go to Him with anything. We are not hidden from Him {Psalm 139: 11-12}. He sees us in the trenches of life; day in and day out. He sees our best days; but more importantly, He sees our worst ones as well. Those days where nothing goes right, and it feels like we just want to hide. No matter how many blankets we bury ourself under, He stills sees us. And the best part, He still love us. Because He sent His son to the cross, we have been given this gift called grace and that gift covers us completely. This is a gift from our Abba; our daddy. When we trust in Him and stop trying to fight our battles alone; it’s like a weight has been lifted off of our chests. For the first time in maybe a really long time, we can take a deep breath and just breathe. This world we live in is unforgiving and manipulative and oh so evil. Don’t try and battle it alone. Instead, crawl onto your daddy’s lap and let Him fight for you {Exodus 14:14}. Take shelter in His arms knowing you are loved and cherished and the child of the King. You are His masterpiece…and He is your Abba.

“I will send out an army to find you in the middle of the darkest night it’s true. I will rescue you. I will never stop marching to reach you in the middle of the hardest fight it’s true. I will rescue you.”
